Dardanus ~ Rameau

15 March 2025/ France / Tourcoing

All of Rameau's musical genius in a never-before-seen version of Dardanus.

With Dardanus, his third lyric tragedy, Rameau confirms the musical and dramatic genius that had dazzled, shocked and bewildered audiences at the premiere of Hippolyte et Aricie in 1733.

The love that binds Dardanus to Iphise (daughter of his enemy), the heroism of the protagonists and the borrowings from the magical (the magician Ismenor) and the fantastic (the monster) are conveyed in a vibrant and powerful way by the orchestral texture, the colours, the harmony and the refined prosody; However, the public's reticence about situations deemed implausible prompted Rameau to undertake not one, but two major revisions of the work, successively in April and May 1744.
We are not talking about minor revisions, but about completely new and as yet unpublished pages of music... but there are of course the emblematic moments of the work, such as the heart-rending ‘lieux funestes’, one of the absolute peaks of Rameau's art.

It is the completely new version from April 1744 that we are offering the public to discover, music of unprecedented modernity in a superlative cast!
