Concert Utopia : Tielman Susato

As an Antwerp-based vocal ensemble, Utopia explores the music of the city’s glory years in the 16th century. Following their projects on the Antwerp Kapellmeister Andreas Pevernage and motet images from Antwerp – which they performed at Laus Polyphoniae 2023 – the musicians have set their sights on Tielman Susato.
Today, Susato is best known as a composer and the publisher of his instrumental ‘danserye’, but Utopia brings his forgotten vocal works back to life: five-part motets and chansons – including a ‘reponse’ to Josquin des Prez’ famous Mille regrets – and the five-part Missa In illo tempore. You will also hear works by Nicolas Gombert, Orlandus Lassus, Thomas Crecquillon and other composers.
