CONCERT: ARIE & LAMENTI - CAPELLA DE MINISTRERS
30 November 2024/ Denmark / Copenhagen
COPENHAGEN RENAISSANCE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2024
Seduced by the texts of Ancient Greece and their emotional impact, the Camerata Fiorentina gathered in 1573 at the home of Count Bardi to imagine classical theater. Its members included Giulio Caccini, Pietro Strozzi, and Vincenzo Galilei, who were inspired by the scholar Girolamo Mai, who claimed that Greek tragedy was predominantly sung.
The Nobile Palermitano likely began its life in Sicily around 1582. The music in this concert comes from the five books that Sigismondo described as 'music for solo singing,' exploring forms of accompanied monody and duets: arias, ostinato basses, laments, and canzonettas. Sigismondo was notable for expressing the dramatic power of words through the use of chromaticism in solo voice compositions. His dramatic style places him alongside great composers of the era.
By the late 16th century, there was a desire to revive the grandeur of ancient Greek music, focusing on accompanied monodies. The concert includes ancient music by Frescobaldi and instrumental works by Kapsberger, Diego Ortiz, and Luigi Rossi.
