Chinoiseries

As early as the 18th century, there was great enthusiasm in Europe for China, which was a mystical and distant place. The interest in exoticism was enormous and the idea of a peaceful giant empire, whose numerous population was literate and philosophically educated down to the lower classes, was fascinating. Many compositions from this period pay homage to the Middle Kingdom. 
Works by Marais, Couperin, Philidor in dialogue with traditional Chinese music.
