Listening to Van Eyck: a musical painting - Jennifer Bloxam, Bart Demuyt, Cappella Pratensis

From 03 April 2024 to 03 April 2024/ France / Paris

The restoration of The Virgin of Chancellor Rolin is an opportunity to take a fresh look at this great masterpiece of Flemish painting. As an extension of the exhibition, this event invites visitors to gain a better understanding of what makes this painting a truly sensory experience, by comparing it with the great music that was played before it.

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, prayers were sung in front of the countless sculpted or painted representations of Christ, the saints and above all the Virgin Mary, which adorned churches and chapels throughout Europe. Along with Chancellor Rolin's Virgin, Jan van Eyck's Annunciation in Washington, also featured in the exhibition, were once focal points for these prayers set to music. What did this music sound like? By whom was it composed and sung? And why?
In this reading-performance, the vocal ensemble Cappella Pratensis and M. Jennifer Bloxam, Herbert H. Lehman Professor Emeritus of Music (Williams College, USA) place these two paintings in the original sound environment of the religious institutions for which they were created.
