Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival
24 to 26 May
Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival will take place from Friday 24th - Sunday 26th May in the stunning churches and on the historic streets of one of the most beautiful towns in the UK.
“It’s always a joy to return to the beautiful town of Beverley for this annual celebration of early music,” says Festival Director Dr Delma Tomlin MBE, adding “This year’s festival is all about passion – and we’re sure that these concerts will inspire and thrill you. As well as an array of world class concerts, we’ll be offering musical workshops and talks, plus the fascinating Ballad Walks, bringing the streets of Beverley to life and revealing its history through music and song.”
Highlights include a flourish of fiery Iberian drama and desire from EEEmerging ensemble Cantoria, whose El Fuego draws on music from the Renaissance. There’s wild romance from Joglaresa as they intertwine melody and song drawn from the shadows of the Byzantine Empire through to Medieval Europe in the passionate and curious tale of The Virgin Queen, while Block4’s Stargazing celebrates artists who looked to the skies for inspiration.
Fitzwilliam String Quartet celebrate their 50th anniversary year with a very special performance of Haydn String Quartet Op 51 “Seven Last Words”, and The Tallis Scholars explore two very English styles separated by a hundred years in A Very English Passion, featuring William Byrd’s Mass for Five Voices performed alongside Fawkyner’s Gaude rosa and Fayrfax’s Maria plena virtute, from the Eton Choirbook.
