- Emotional contrasts in programme music of the 18th century
Trio La Follia
Julia Kuhn (baroque violin) | Thomas Pitt (baroque cello) | David Wright (harpsichord)
The programme ‘Lamento & Follia’ deals with emotional contrasts in baroque music. With great imagination, composers such as Corelli, Tartini, Veracini and Leclair use programmatic stylistic devices to create great dynamic and emotional contrasts. Grief, despondency, exuberance and madness through to madness and melancholy are musically depicted with virtuosity. The programme demonstrates the diverse means of expression and the sometimes extreme emotionality of the Baroque period.
The programme includes Tartini's famous ‘Devil's Trill Sonata’, Corelli's variations on ‘La Follia’ and Leclair's ‘Le Tombeau’.
