"Was ich euch singen thu!" – The Whole World of News Songs
26 January 2025/ Switzerland / Basel
Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, people could not only read what was happening in the world around them, but they could also hear it. News of all sorts was brought to the market by specialised printers such as Johann Schröter from Basel, performed by street singers in the alleys or pubs, and sold to the public as convenient pamphlets to learn and repeat themselves. Until recently, such song pamphlets have been barely recognised as a news genre of the early modern period; now, they will be performed on stage, shedding light on an incredibly rich musical repertoire.
