Unlikely Crossings

Florian Helgarth is one of the most appreciated choral conductors of the new generation, standing out as artistic director of the ChorWerk Ruhr and the Zürcher Sing-Akademie. He makes his debut at the head of the Casa da Música Choir on a late afternoon of strong contrasts, proposing a dialogue between the past and the future. The programme begins with Bach's best-known motet, Jesu meine Freude, unique for its complex structure in which hymns and biblical texts are combined. His fascination with Baroque themes and forms inspired the composers who followed. The Norwegian Knut Nystedt wrote a Stabat Mater that combines the choir with the emotive power of the cello, which is considered to be the instrument closest to the human voice. The programme includes two movements of Caroline Shaw's astonishing Partita for eight voices, a work honoured with a Pulitzer Prize for Music.
