The beautifully decorated 15th-century choir book known as the Old Hall manuscript was thought lost for about 400 years. Until it turned up in a Catholic seminary in the late 19th century. It was the largest surviving collection of medieval motets and mass movements and immediately became the most celebrated source of English music of the period. It was initially recorded by a single scribe, whose aim was to ensure that the music of his fellow singers was not forgotten.
Many motets and mass movements are known only from this manuscript, and in this programme they find their voice again after more than half a millennium of silence. Transformed by the singing of Trio Mediæval in the company of Catalina Vicens, these works shine alongside new music by Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen and David Lang.
