SEMINAR: THE GOLDEN AGE OF VALENCIA
05 September 2024/ Spain / Valencia
Music and Literature in the Renaissance
The Golden Age of Valencia was a period of great cultural effervescence. Authors such as Ausiàs March, Joanot Martorell, Jaume Roig, Joan Roís de Corella, and Isabel de Villena represent the best of our medieval literature. The Crown of Aragon, extending as far as Naples with the conquest by Alfonso the Magnanimous and the presence of the Borgia popes in Rome, saw Renaissance cultural currents increasingly present in our lands.
This European cultural vanguard continued into much of the following century: in Valencia, an Italian-style court was established, led by the Duke of Calabria and the widowed Queen Germana of Foix, now viceroys of Valencia. This court became the center of literary production by figures such as Lluís del Milà, Joan Ferrandis d’Herèdia, and Baltasar de Romaní, among others.
Alongside all this literary activity, there was music. In fact, through some of these written works, we can trace how music and dance were integral parts of the cultural milieu of the time.

In these sessions, we will explore this cultural and musical environment with the help of specialists from different universities who will provide their insights into our most distinguished cultural century.
