The Boston Early Music Festival comes to the Sendesaal twice a year to record and present great dramatic works of the Baroque. This January, the Grammy-winning BEMF Vocal and Chamber Ensembles under the leadership of Musical Directors Paul O'Dette and Stephen Stubbs present a selection of works by Giacomo Carissimi. Carissimi's oratorio Jephte is one of the most popular dramatic creations of the 17th century, a seminal work that has been studied and imitated by composers throughout Europe. His motets are less well known, but each of them is a small masterpiece, full of contrasting sections of ecstatic virtuosity, heart-rending melancholy and also cheerfulness. The same program will be presented in Hamburg on January 25th.
