Carissimi's oratorio Jephte is one of the most popular dramatic creations of the 17th century, a seminal work that has been studied and imitated by composers throughout Europe. His motets are less well known, but each of them is a small masterpiece, full of contrasting sections of ecstatic virtuosity, heart-rending melancholy and also cheerfulness. The same program will be performed in Bremen on January 24.
