HESPÈRION XXI in AMUZ: Variation and Improvisation in Old Europe and the New World

08 January 2025/ Belgium / Antwerp

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the popularity of Iberian dances such as the folia and fandango spread across the entire continent. Spanish and Portuguese galleons took the music across the ocean, where it took on a life of its own in the colonies. Conversely, the South American jácara, guaracha and canario inspired many European composers.
The legendary viol player Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI immerse AMUZ (Flanders Festival) in a century of music driven by variation and improvisation, from Diego Ortiz’ early folia and the pioneering guitar work of Gaspar Sanz to exuberantly ornamented songs from the Manchester Gamba Book, diferencias by Antonio Martín y Coll and Antonio Valente’s blazing Jarabe Loco
