Antiche Regine

16 November 2024/ Italy / Turin

The program of this concert is focused on the simultaneously glorious and tragic figures of two great protagonists of ancient history, namely Cleopatra, last sovereign of the Tolomei dynasty, who linked her existence to Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, and Semiramis, legendary Assyrian queen who - according to  some Greek historians - founded Babylon, decorating it with the famous hanging gardens.
Thanks to the tormented events of their lives, both experienced extraordinary fortune among the composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Georg Friedrich Händel and Nicola Porpora, authors of works of the highest artistic value such as Julius Caesar in Egypt and Semiramide recognised, the latter based on the refined libretto by Pietro Metastasio. The arias on the program extremely vividly outline the proud and indomitable personality of these ancient queens, while at the same time bringing out their most human traits.
