A search for the essence of Portuguese polychoral music of the 17th century.
12 - 14 March 2010, Neerpelt (BE)
The annual winds course (Gabrieli workshop) will this year be directed by Wim Becu, Adam
Woolf and Judith Pacquier. They explore the so-called ‘polychoral style’ in 17-century Portugal.
Works by Frei Manuel Cardoso, Antonio Carreira and Joao Lourenço Rebelo will be performed.
19th–century brass instrument laboratory
16 - 18 April 2010, Lier (BE)
Because of its technological developments, the 19th century can be called revolutionary for brass
players, with innovations in instrument building taking on never-before-seen proportions.
During this new laboratory, the instructors will acquaint (pre) professional musicians with
particular playing techniques, instruments and the 19th-century repertoire including some lesserknown
works. You’ll play the instruments coached by the following members of the Orchestre des
Champs-Elysées: Alain De Rudder, Luc Bergé, Wim Becu and Marc Girardot
Works from Jean François Victor Bellon, Antoine Simon, Félicien-César David, …
International Young Artist's Presentation - Historically Informed Performance
Coach: Jill Feldmann
26-29 August 2010 - Antwerp (BE)

Having just celebrated its 10th birthday, the International Young Artist’s Presentation
(IYAP) underwent a substantial makeover. More than ever, IYAP wants to reach out to young
vocal and/or instrumental ensembles playing on authentic instruments and working on a musical
repertoire up to 1920. The coaching sessions - lead by American soprano Jill Feldman! - will be a
crucial point of attention, as will be the concerts offered to the selected ensembles at various
historic locations in Antwerp during the early music festival Laus Polyphoniae
Deadline for applications: 1 April 2010
IYAP is a project of Musica, realized in cooperation with AMUZ

INTERNATIONAL MASTERCLASS
Wim Becu, director
Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica by Michael Praetorius
2
01-07 November 2010
Domein Dommelhof, Neerpelt (BE)
Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) is best known for his treatise Syntagma Musicum. Yet he was
also an especially prolific composer. Praetorius’s repertoire deserves wider recognition, not only
because of its polychoral writing and colourful instrumentation, but also for its expressive content.
The collection Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica (1618) was the first in a series planned to
take up 15 volumes. Praetorius combines exceptional technical skill with an unusual creativity
(among other things in his use of chorales as Cantus Firmus).
During this masterclass you’ll get to know the most memorable pieces from the volume
Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica. One special aspect of the masterclass is that we will work
completely from original facsimiles, which enhances the experience of interpreting this music.
Coaches
Musical direction: Wim Becu; vocal coach: Dirk Snellings
Participants
Pre-professional and professional singers and instrumentalists.
Deadline for registration is 15 May 2010.
