An international music festival in Central Germany, at authentic venues in the city of George Frideric Handel’s birthplace Halle an der Saale.
The Handel Festival has been held in Halle since 1922. It all began with new productions of Handel’s operas and these still form the backbone of the festival programme of today. Every year, the Handel Festival and the Halle Opera House produce one of the numerous Handel operas. Of the 42 operas by Handel which have come down to us, 40 of them have been performend at the Handel Festival to date. This is a unique record, inrivalled anywhere in the world. The Handel Festival Orchestra Halle first distinguished itself as a Baroque ensemble performing on period instruments for the very special task of accompanying Handel operas in Halle in 1993.
The Handel Festival stands for tradition both in the performance and reception of Handel’s works, as well as for innovation and crossover. It consistently offers its international audience new pieces, rediscoveries and a variety of interpretation styles, most of them in historical Handel venues, such as the cathedral, the Marktkirche, Handel House, or the historical Goethe-Theater in nearby Bad Lauchstädt.
Handel Festival 2014 in Halle (Saale), Germany 5 – 15 June 2014
One particular focus of the Handel Festival in Halle (Germany) will be on the 300th anniversary of the coronation of Georg Ludwig as George I of England. George I, who employed Handel as his kapellmeister before moving to London, had his residence in Hanover where he bore the title of Georg Ludwig of Brunswick-Lueneburg, and was called to succeed to the British throne in 1714. From June 5 until June 15 the programme offers 4 scenic opera productions and 5 oratorios or large choral works among others.
Handel House (Exhibitions) _ The Handel House is the birthplace of George Frideric Handel (23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759). Visitors to the museum can follow Handel’s career and gain insights into the society he lived in and into the way he composed from the permanent exhibition, which includes contemporary exhibits, in particular musical instruments and paintings.
Recorded guided tours are available in a wide range of foreign languages, giving information about Handel’s life and times along with exemplary interpretations of the music. A printed Guide to the Handel Exhibition in English is also available.
